100 Degrees of Freedom - Backpacking IntersessionIn statistics, the number of degrees of freedom is the number of values in the final calculation of a statistic that are free to vary. In physics, it’s a direction in which independent motion can occur. For veterans in operations of freedom, it may be the degree of posttraumatic stress. For migrants, it may be the degree at which they travel on foot to seek asylum. Freedom can mean a lot of different things for different people.
Students embark on a 100 mile journey along the Pacific Crest Trail after receiving 3 hours of Wilderness First Responder Training, CPR certification, and knowledge of Leave No Trace Principles. Students also meet with legal experts and organization staff at Casa Cornelia, a non-profit law firm providing quality legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations. Casa Cornelia informs students of the efforts that individuals seeking asylum must endure to find protection for themselves and their families. Many have traveled (and will continue to travel) significant miles and endure great hardships just to reach the United States. The organization’s staff updates students on current issues facing refugees and immigrants, and educates them on how they can become involved in the cause. |
